Action

A publishing embed that connects readers to the power of their civic voice, founded by Jordan Hewson, founding editor of Global Citizen and daughter of activists Ali Hewson and Bono. Using a traditional Double Diamond design approach, I discovered opportunities for value creation, defined userflows, designed interface components, and developed prototypes.

Changing the headlines

Action modules are embedded in news articles, prompting readers to take a poll, sign a petition, tweet at a policy-maker, or donate to a nonprofit without leaving the page. If you’re inspired to take action after reading an article, a press of a button allows you to add your signature to an NGO-backed petition, amplifying the power of your support by combining it with multitudes.

The first priority was to get the experience right — the modules had to feel trustworthy and seamlessly integrate with articles. Armed with user research, publisher interviews, and a beta run on the Huffington Post, I created a customizable design that engaged readers to act.

Collaborating with students

Four years after its inception, Action embeds were in major online publications, Rob Walport joined as Head of Product, and I was teaching at Parsons School of Design.

In my graduate course, students worked with Jordan and Rob in a seven-week mock Inception. Students learned about the mission, value proposition, and audience; conducted research and interviews; identified opportunities for new offerings; tested concepts with lo-fi wireframes; and presented moodboards, UI clouds, key screens, diagrams, and hi-fi prototypes directly to the client.
